FIGHT OR FLIGHT
Our body’s are designed for us to be in a naturally relaxed and healing state the majority of the time, however, most of us spend the best part of our day in “fight or flight” mode. This is a natural response to danger in which the body tenses up and cannot heal or repair itself.
The fight or flight response begins with a rapid release of stress hormones which boosts our energy, later leaving you feeling lethargic and hungry (one of the reasons stress can cause weight gain). We live in a fast-paced world, we are inundated with digital media and we all face everyday pressures, such as over-stimulation, social anxieties or a pressure to multi-task. All of these aspects can cause the fight or flight response to set off multiple times in one day. Feeling stressed can lead to the cause of other emotions such as anxiety, fear, anger, frustration and depression – all of which can feed on each other and produce physical symptoms in the body.
To cope with the fight or flight response, our brains suppress our relaxed brain waves, Alpha and Theta, and produce more of a high intensity brain wave frequency called Beta. If this happens often, our brain will familiarise to this new stress pattern, making it difficult to wind down. This can cause insomnia, poor memory, lack of motivation, negative self-talk, weight gain, low energy or all of the above.
